7th Annual Keepin’ It Renal Run/Walk

The Chris “CJ” Johnson Foundation’s 7th annual Keepin’ It Renal Run/Walk scheduled for March 28, 2020 was postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic. We had to do the right thing and follow the directives of our local and state officials. Older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions are at a higher risk of getting COVID-19. With safety in mind, we decided that this year’s event would be held virtually on June 6, 2020 at 0830. COVID-19 has impacted the lives of so many people, but it could not stop us from our advocacy efforts and being available to our RMC patients.
Having the event virtually allowed us to have participants join us from around the world. Nicola in the UK organized her team in memory of her husband, Ricky and Charissa organized her team in New Jersey in memory of Carlos, Marlene and Teresa walked in Albuquerque in memory of Matthew. Marquise (Albuquerque) also walked in memory of his Dad, Chris and recorded a beautiful video. Joyce in North Carolina and her children walked in her honor. Despite her walking in pain, she made it. We had at least 50 people join our family at Sugar Land Memorial Park. We walked in memory of Chris and others who succumbed to this terrible disease. We had participants all over the United States that wanted to participate in the past, but were not able to get to Houston. Our first virtual walk was a success and we will continue to add this component to our main event next year. This year we donated $5,000 to UT MD Anderson Cancer Center to continue RMC research. Because of our wonderful sponsors, we exceeded our goal of $25,000. Proceeds from this event will be utilized to address healthcare disparities and hopefully bridge the gap for our RMC patients to have access to adequate healthcare.
