Devon’s Remarkable Journey: A Story of Resilience and Hope – By Amanda Porcelli (Mother)
- January 16, 2025
When Devon was 18 years old, his life took an unexpected turn that would test his strength and resilience in unimaginable ways. It all began on New Year’s Day of 2022 when he started experiencing severe pain on his right side. At the time, I was in the hospital recovering from back surgery, completely unaware of the life-altering news my son was about to receive. Devon’s girlfriend had taken him to a different hospital where doctors discovered a tumor on his kidney. I couldn’t be there with him, which was heartbreaking for both of us.
Devon’s medical team began running tests, and he called me, confused and worried, asking if he had sickle cell. I told him no, and he explained that the doctors kept asking about it. Due to his age, Devon had to sign paperwork for me to be allowed access to his medical information. Once that was done, we began the arduous journey of seeking answers.
The initial biopsy was inconclusive, and a second was required. Eventually, the samples were sent to Johns Hopkins for further analysis. It was there that we finally received the diagnosis: Renal Medullary Carcinoma (RMC), a rare and aggressive form of kidney cancer often associated with sickle cell trait. This devastating news set the course for a whirlwind of medical interventions.
Within a week, Devon underwent surgery to remove his right kidney. The procedure went smoothly, and he began the long road to recovery. Living in Panama City, Florida, we were referred to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida for treatment. Devon had to travel there every six weeks for an overnight stay to receive his treatments and attended weekly sessions locally.
The chemotherapy regimen prescribed was intense and exhausting, but Devon faced it with incredible determination and courage. Despite the strength of the drugs, he experienced minimal side effects. After just one round of chemotherapy, scans showed remarkable progress—the cancer had almost completely disappeared. Over six months, Devon persevered through the treatment and does not have any evidence of disease.
Today, Devon remains in remission and continues regular follow-ups at UF Health Shands Hospital every three months. These scans will continue for five years as a precaution. His journey has been nothing short of miraculous, and I firmly believe that God was with him every step of the way.
Our family is deeply grateful for the support and expertise of the medical professionals who cared for Devon. We are also committed to raising awareness about RMC in our community. This disease is so silent and often goes undetected until it is advanced. Sharing Devon’s story is our way of offering hope to others and shining a light on the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.
Devon’s story is a testament to resilience, faith, and the power of hope. To anyone facing a similar battle, know that you are not alone. With the right support and determination, even the most challenging journeys can lead to triumph.
