“In Memory of Julia: A Tribute to Her Strength and Resilience” By Ritchie Johnson
- August 16, 2024
It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of another RMC warrior, Julia, who was 46 years old and leaves behind three young children, including her nephew, whom she was raising. I first met Julia virtually in our RMC Support group meeting in July 2023. Even through a screen, her strength and determination to fight this disease shone brightly. Diagnosed with renal medullary carcinoma in October 2022, Julia’s journey was marked by courage and resilience. Her father, Ron, was by her side every step of the way, attending support group meetings despite living in a different state. His unwavering support and awareness of the gravity of Julia’s condition were remarkable.
Through the Chris “CJ” Johnson RMC support group, Julia learned about clinical trials at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) and was eager to get to Houston. However, her insurance was not accepted by MDACC, denying her access to the clinical trials. In March of this year (2024), Julia made the difficult decision to pay out of pocket to be evaluated by Dr. Msaouel, a world-renowned physician specializing in RMC. The visit was successful, and a treatment plan was developed so Julia could continue her care at home. However, Julia’s doctor in Indianapolis later informed her that there were no other treatment options available.
Undeterred, Julia and Ron persisted, and their insurance company eventually approved her continued treatment at MDACC. Julia and Ron traveled back and forth to Houston, with her final treatment occurring just two weeks ago. I share this to highlight the real and significant obstacles our RMC community faces, including health disparities and denial of access. Julia and Ron’s persistence is a testament to what is often required to secure quality care—a burden that no one battling cancer should have to bear.
In March 2024, I had the privilege of meeting Julia in person at our Keepin’ It Renal Run/Walk. Despite her illness, she was determined to attend, making the trip to Houston with her father. Julia’s strength was palpable, and though she fought valiantly to extend her time, God called her home on the morning of August 14th, surrounded by family and friends. Walking alongside Julia and Ron on this journey has been deeply personal, and I’m grateful that our foundation could provide some support during her battle. While my heart is broken, this loss fuels my commitment to continue our advocacy until a cure is found. Too many children and young adults are being taken from us by this relentless cancer.
By working together and advocating for ourselves and our communities, we can make a meaningful impact. Let us ensure that no one faces this disease without the support and resources they need.
On behalf of the Chris “CJ” Johnson Foundation and the RMC community, we extend our deepest condolences to Ron and the entire family. Julia is now among the warriors who have gone before her, embraced in the Heavenly Kingdom. May God bring comfort to her loved ones during this difficult time. We also want to thank Dr. Msaouel for his tireless efforts to find a cure for this dreadful disease. Rest in peace, Julia.
