Dawann Anthony Steagall, Jr. affectionately known as “DJ” was the youngest of two children. He was born April 27, 1999 in Chesapeake, Virginia to Dawann and Belinda Steagall.
Dawann graduated from West Potomac High School in 2017. Following in his brother’s footsteps, he attended Old Dominion University where he earned his degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology in 2021. He built a successful career as Chief of Staff for the Virginia House of Delegates where he worked under the Honorable Alex Askew. On February 10, 2026, Dawann stood before the general assembly in Richmond, Virginia to advocate for sickle cell screenings for young adults. His bill HB 392 was passed and will go into effect on July 1, 2026. Dawann was known for his sharp mind and unparalleled work ethic.
Beyond his professional life, Dawann had an adventurous spirit. He love to travel to other countries and was a die-hard New England Patriots fan. He approached every day with enthusiasm and a great sense of humor. He will be remembered most for his generous heart, his infectious laugh, and the unwavering love he showed to his family. He brought so much light, laughter and to to those around him.
Dawann gave his life to Christ. He attended Gethsemane CommunityFellowship Baptist Church in Norfolk. Virginia where he remained a member. He demonstrated his love for Christ every day by helping others in need.
Dawann was diagnosed with Renal Medullary Carcinoma (RMC) at the young age of 26. He was able to receive the treatment he needed thanks to the Honorable Alex Askew. Although he fought bravely, he was called home to rest safely in the hollow arms of out Father, Jesus Christ on Sunday May 31, 2026 in Baltimore, Maryland at the age of 27.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and will forever be missed by his family and friends.
