Unstoppable Force for Renal Medullary Carcinoma Awareness by Ritchie Johnson
- April 01, 2025
March is recognized as Kidney Cancer Awareness Month, with orange as its designated color. However, for those of us in the renal medullary carcinoma (RMC) community, the fight for awareness and education does not stop when the calendar turns. RMC is the most aggressive and fatal of all kidney cancers, disproportionately affecting individuals with the sickle cell trait. It is a disease that demands year-round attention, advocacy, and action.
Our kidneys are essential to a healthy life, and proper hydration is crucial to maintaining their function. Yet, far too often, kidney health is overlooked until it is too late. This is why the Chris “CJ” Johnson Foundation remains steadfast in its mission to educate communities, advocate for early detection, and support those affected by RMC.
During the month of March, we hosted our 12th Annual Keepin’ It Renal Run/Walk, an event dedicated to raising funds, educating communities, and heightening awareness of RMC. This annual gathering brings together patients, families, advocates, and medical professionals to share knowledge, resources, and hope. The event is not just about running or walking; it is about standing in solidarity with those affected and making a lasting impact in the fight against RMC.
Despite our efforts, the devastating reality of RMC persists. During March, we mourned the loss of three brave warriors who succumbed to this disease, and another life was taken in February. These losses serve as a stark reminder of why we cannot slow down or remain silent. Every life lost to RMC fuels our determination to push forward, raise awareness, and demand progress in research and treatment options.
The Chris “CJ” Johnson Foundation is an unstoppable force for RMC awareness. Our commitment to advocacy does not waver when the awareness month ends. We will continue to push for change, educate communities, and support families impacted by this disease. Through collaboration, education, and unwavering dedication, we believe a future without RMC is possible.
We invite you to join us in this fight. Whether through participating in our events, sharing educational resources, or advocating for policy changes, your involvement makes a difference. Together, we can honor those we have lost, support those still fighting, and pave the way for a world where RMC no longer claims lives.
